18/04/2007 - Children are reluctant or unable to leave parental home

Official figures show a rise in the number of 20 somethings living at home with their parents. Six out of ten men aged 20-24 and four out of 10 women in England have found it impossible to leave their parental home. This is due to two main factors, one is the growth of higher education and the other main factor is the rise in property prices. The rise shows an increase of 16 per cent for men and 20 per cent for women.

The research also highlighted the increase in the level of male offspring in their late 20's remaining with parents and how one in ten are still at home into their 30's. The Social Trends study also highlighted older women are increasingly marrying younger men with analysts pointing to the fact that a growth in earnings and education has meant that women are less likely to marry early. Previous research had shown that young adults had gone back to their parental home for financial handouts and that living at home meant that they could live rent free.
